es-419 and other codes Google does not support

BCP 47 allows numeric UN M.49 area codes as regions. es-419 means Spanish for Latin America and the Caribbean, and many content systems use the code by default. Google supports only ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 regions in hreflang, so the numeric value is ignored and the page drops out of the cluster.

Two replacements work. The first is plain es, which targets Spanish speakers everywhere and suits one shared Latin American version. The second lists each country the page serves, such as es-MX, es-AR and es-CO, all pointing at the same URL. Repeating one URL under several codes is allowed, as long as every code also appears on the other members.

Other values Google ignores are underscores (en_US), three-letter language codes where a two-letter one exists (eng) and a region on its own (us). The code reference explains each one.
